The Commonwealth Bank Of Australia is also the largest bank in the Southern Hemisphere. It was established by the Australian Government in 1911. This bank was privatized in 1996. The Bank’s global headquarters are in Darling Harbor and Darling Quarter, Sydney Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), also known as ComBank, is an Australian multinational bank with expansions in New Zealand, Asia, the United States and the United Kingdom. Its job is to provide a wide variety of financial services including retail, business and institutional banking, fund management, retirement, insurance, investment and broking services. Commonwealth Bank is the largest Australian listed company on the Australian Securities Exchange as of August 2015, with brands such as Bankwest, Colonial First State Investments, ASB Bank (New Zealand), Commonwealth Securities (COMSEC) and Commonwealth Insurance (ComInsure).
Its former constituent parts were the Commonwealth Trading Bank of Australia, the Commonwealth Savings Bank of Australia and the Commonwealth Development Bank.
Commonwealth Bank is one of the “big four” Australian banks along with National Australia Bank (NAB), ANZ and Westpac. This bank was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1991.
This bank was the first bank to receive a federal government guarantee in Australia. The bank’s earliest and most vigorous proponent was the flamboyant American-Australian Labor politician, King O’Malley, and its first governor was Sir Denison Miller.
The first branch of the bank was opened in Melbourne on 15 July 1912. The bank also conducted business through post office agencies. In 1912, it acquired the State Savings Bank of Tasmania and by 1913 it had branches in all six states.
In 1916, the head office of the bank shifted to Sydney. It also followed the Australian military in New Guinea, where it opened a branch in Rabaul and agencies elsewhere.
In 1920, the bank began to acquire the powers of a central bank, when it assumed responsibility.
