Bank of America Corporation is an American multinational investment bank and financial services holding company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in San Francisco, Bank of America was formed in 1998 through the acquisition of BankAmerica by NationBank. It is the second largest banking institution in the United States, after JPMorgan Chase, and the eighth largest bank in the world. Bank of America is one of the largest four banking institutions in the United States. It serves approximately 10.73% of all US bank deposits, in direct competition with JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo. Its primary financial services are commercial banking, wealth management and investment banking.

A branch of its history extends to the Bank of Italy, founded in 1904 by Amadeo Pietro Giannini, which offered various banking options to Italian immigrants facing service discrimination. Originally headquartered in San Francisco, California, Giannini acquired Banca d’America e d’Italia (Bank of America and Italy) in 1922. The passage of the landmark federal banking law facilitated rapid growth in the 1950s, quickly establishing a dominant market share. After suffering a significant loss following the 1998 Russian bond default, BankAmerica, as it was known at the time, was acquired by Charlotte-based NationsBank for US$62 billion. Bank of America Corporation was established after what was then the largest bank acquisition in history. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, it built out its commercial banking business by establishing (renamed BofA Securities) Merrill Lynch for wealth management and Bank of America Merrill Lynch for investment banking in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
